Horseborn1

Canary (or Cainánóiridhe), a horseborn and leader of the largest tribe of her kind.

The horseborn are a race of creatures that live to the south and east of men and varl, residing primarily in the flat plains of Dalalond.

It is known that they are centaurs who may have interbred in the past with horses (based on the image and information provided on the map near the Plains of Slaughter and on the image provided for the item Horseskor). Male horseborn (and the corresponding base class for both Hero and Enemy units) are called Teulu while females are called Cantref.

Horseborn have mainly Celtic influences: Their names are in Welsh, and despite the name they're actually a mix of man and (Irish/Welsh) pony. This incidentally is why most of them occupy one tile instead of two on the battle grid.

Teulu[ | ]

Teulu is the name used for the Horseborn males and the corresponding base class for both Hero and Enemy units. They are melee fighters usually using flails and having no shield.

Class Attributes[ | ]

Units belonging to the Teulu class have the following attributes:

  • Size: 1x1 tile
  • Movement Range: 4 tiles
  • Attack Range: 1 tiles (melee)
  • Passive Ability: Hit and Run (see below)
  • Stats: Similar to human-melee units, like Raiders.

Passive Ability: Hit and Run[ | ]

The Horseborn Teulu takes his normal movement, then can attack or use an Ability. Once the action is complete, he can move again up to three tiles; no Willpower may be spent on the second move.

The promoted classes stemming from Teulu are not named. The active abilities available to Teulu are:

Hero Teulu units, Scathach and Ro'Ech, start with one of those abilities and acquire the other when promoted to Rank 6. Enemy Teulu units have access to both abilities, at Rank 1 (of 3) only.

Variation 2 10 10 5 2 3 1 1
Trìgecánnthàe 20 14 8 2 3 3 2
Trìgecánnthàe[ | ]

Trìgecánnthàe is a large 2x2-tile sized Teulu with higher stats and an extra active ability, Sundering Impact (like Hakon). He is the leader of a hostile Horseborn herd that raids human settlements near the Old Wood and can be confronted in Chapter 12.

  • Trìgecánnthàe also appears in two battles of the Survival Mode offered with the second part of The Banner Saga.

Trivia[ | ]

Teulu is the welsh word for family.

Cantref[ | ]

Cantref is the name used for the Horseborn females and the corresponding base class for both Hero and Enemy units. They are ranged fighters usually throwing javelins.

Passive Ability: Free Roam[ | ]

While moving, each Willpower the Horseborn Cantref spends allows her to travel 2 tiles instead of 1.

The promoted classes stemming from Cantref are not named. The active abilities available to Cantref are:

  • Icon pin Pin — Deals regular damage and reduces target's movement range.
  • Icon poisontipped Poison Tipped — Deals (small) Strength damage for 3 Rounds.

Derdriu starts with Poison Tipped and gains Pin when promoted to Rank 6, whereas Canary starts with both abilities. Unlike the Teulu, the enemy Cantref units only have access to Pin, at Rank 1 (of 3).

Enemy Cantref[ | ]

During the second part of The Banner Saga you will fight against regular Horseborn Cantref as well as a version (called Javelineer) with extended attack range, in the battle where you face Canary's herd.

Cantref STR ARM WIL EXE BRK Max Range
Variation 1 9 9 3 1 2 4
Variation 2 10 8 3 1 1 4
Javelineer 10 8 3 1 2 8

Trivia[ | ]

  • A cantref was a division of land in medieval Wales.
  • Horseborn have mainly Celtic influences: Their names are in Welsh. The term 'horseborn' is a misnomer as they're actually a mix of man and (Irish/Welsh) pony. This incidentally is also why most of them occupy one tile instead of two on the battle grid.
