The Loom-mother is the primary female goddess in The Banner Saga. She originally created the human race by learning to weave life into her tapestry, which was the fabric of creation. She created the world and wove reason as an attribute into them.

She taught weaving and mending to the humans who came to be known as the Valka. Other gods attempted to copy her weaving but were only able to create imperfect copies of humans like the Varl and the horseborn.

One of the gods however in jealousy created the Dredge, beings with stone-like armor and immortal natural lifespan. Disgusted, the Loom-Mother punished the Dredge creator and accidentally killed him. This had the unintended effect in starting a war amongst the gods, who were shocked to find out they could die.
