Leaderboards[edit | edit source]

In game, the leaderboards show the top players for the current and previous Eternal Challenges, as well as the players who have achieved the highest score in a challenge among all other players.

Create Your Own Arena[edit | edit source]

The 'Create your own Arena' button will take you to the Arena Setup screen. The screen is divided into three sections:

Each section offers a button to 'Randomize' your options, a 'Save' button to save your settings for later use, and a 'Play' button to try out your arena.

Board[edit | edit source]

EA-Setup-B.png

Board menu has 4 setting for you to choose (the first ones filtering the following ones)

  • Saga,
  • Arena,
  • Board,
  • Waves (if supported).

Saga[edit | edit source]

The saga lets you choose between Banner Saga 1, 2, or 3. This option filters the Arenas that are available to you (next setting). Which heroes, enemies, or items you use is selected on the Combatants screen.

Arena[edit | edit source]

'Arenas' are the various battle scenes from the Banner Saga series, filtered by the current Saga (previous setting). For example, for Saga1, one of the first Arenas is the [Strand] Great Hall.

Each arena has one or more boards that are available to that scene.

Boards[edit | edit source]

Arena-Thumbnail.png

Each board is unique to the Arena (battle scene) it is on. Each board specifies the hero and enemy starting positions with blue and red tiles in the thumbnail. Some boards allow for wave battles.

Waves[edit | edit source]

If available for the Arena you whose (second setting), the Waves option will appear. Here you may toggle the wave battle system OFF or ON. If ON, you will be faced with extra waves of enemies. Be sure to bring extra heroes to the battle!

Rules[edit | edit source]

EA-Setup-A.png

Rules has 5 options for you to choose:

  • Difficulty,
  • Scoring,
  • Artifact,
  • Timer,
  • Initiative Order.

Difficulty[edit | edit source]

Allows you to select Easy, Medium, or Hard which affects enemy difficulty just like in the regular game. There is a 0%, 20%, and 50% bonus multiplier to your score (see following setting) for Easy, Medium, and Hard, respectively.

Scoring[edit | edit source]

There are 9 different scoring options to choose from. Each offers a different bonus based on certain conditions you should try to achieve in battle.

There are 6 basic scoring subtotals that will affect the overall Arena score:

Victory Bonus: danger * 500 OR 0 when DEFEATED
Turn Penalty: (player_turns + enemy_turns) * -50
Enemy Kills: player_kills * 50
Hero Deaths: hero_ranks * -15
Scoring Rules: See below
Difficulty Bonus: The sum of the above * ( Easy=0%, Medium=20%, Hard=50% )

Your total score is the sum of all 6 of your subtotals.

Danger linearly scales with Hero Rank, with a minimum of 7 (at Rank 1) and capping to 20 (at Ranks 14 and 15).

danger = min( Rank + 6, 20 )

Below follows a list of the Scoring Rules

None[edit | edit source]

No bonus scoring! Your final score will be determined by your Victory Bonus, Turn Penalty, Enemy Kills, Hero Death Penalty, and the Difficulty Bonus multiplier only.

Empty Satchel[edit | edit source]

It can be more challenging going into battle without an item. Gain a bonus per hero without an item.

We take the triangle number of the total heroes without items that fought in the battle.

( hwi * ( hwi + 1 ) / 2 ) * 150
The Forgotten[edit | edit source]

Heroic titles grant your heroes an exceptional bonus. Gain a bonus per hero without a heroic title. The bonus' multiplier grows faster the more heroes you send into battle without an item!

We take the triangle number of the total heroes without titles that fought in the battle.

( hwt * ( hwt + 1 ) / 2 ) * 150
Stoic Heroes[edit | edit source]

Each hero that is in more than one wave gives you a large bonus to your score. The more waves they are in, the larger the bonus!

We take the triangle number of the Multi Wave Hero Sum, which is a bit difficult to explain. For each hero, we sum the total number of waves they fought in. We then sum all of those values that are greater than or equal to 2. So if 6 heroes all fight in the first two waves, then 3 of those heroes fight in the 3rd wave along with 3 new heroes, we would have 3 heroes with a value of 1 (the heroes that fought only in the last battle), 3 heroes with a value of 2 (the heroes that fought in the first two waves, but not the third), and three heroes with a value of 3 (the heroes that fought in all three waves). multi_wave_hero_sum would then be equal to 15 = ( 3 * 3 + 3 * 2 ).

( mwhs * ( mwhs + 1 ) / 2 ) * 10 * danger
Sundr's Strength[edit | edit source]

You'll gain a bonus with attacks that do a lot of damage. The bigger the hit, the bigger the bonus. Small hits for only a few points of damage won't help you here!

We take the triangle number of the number of hits that do at least 8 points of damage and multiply that by 15.

( big_hits * ( big_hits + 1 ) / 2 ) * 15
A Battle of Strength[edit | edit source]

In this battle of strength, each hero and enemy will regain 1 STR on their turn and 4 STR per kill! Your bonus increases for each enemy killed with a basic STR attack.

We multiply the number of kills caused by a regular strength attack by 500.

kills_str * 500
A Battle of Will[edit | edit source]

In this battle of will, each hero and enemy will regain 1 WIL on their turn and 4 WIL per kill! Your bonus increases for each enemy killed with an ability.

We multiply the number of kills caused by abilities by 500.

kills_ability * 500
A Battle of Motion[edit | edit source]

In this battle of motion, each hero and enemy will gain 2 MOV, regain 1 WIL per 3 tiles moved per turn, and 1 STR per 4 tiles moved per turn! Your bonus increases for each tile of movement by heroes AND enemies!

We multiply the number of tiles moved by players and enemies by 100.

( hero_tiles_moved + enemy_tiles_moved ) * 100

Artifact[edit | edit source]

You may toggle between the Horn and the Valka Spear. Both gain charges when an enemy is defeated. Use the Horn to add 1 point of Willpower to the current hero. Use the Valka Spear to cast a (weak version of) Arc Lightning in a range around the current hero.

Timer[edit | edit source]

You may toggle the timer off and on. When on, it behaves as in Survival Mode and you will have 30 seconds on each hero's turn to move them and have them attack or use an ability.

Initiative Order[edit | edit source]

You may toggle between Alternating (as in the story mode) or Pillage (as in Survival Mode).

Combatants[edit | edit source]

EA-Setup-C.png

Combatants is where you define the parameters of your Party and the Enemy.

Hero Rank[edit | edit source]

You may choose the Rank of your heroes from 1 to 15 (all heroes will have the same rank). The hero rank affects your choice of Hero Items as well as the danger level.

Hero Roster[edit | edit source]

There are several different hero rosters to choose from, including a roster with the heroes from every Banner Saga game!

Hero Items[edit | edit source]

This is a YES or NO toggle. If set to YES, all items are potentially available to you, effectively limited by the Hero Rank you chose (first setting).

Enemies[edit | edit source]

There are several different enemy groupings to choose from. The Enemies lists is divided into two sections, Enemies and Additional Wave Enemies. The Additional Wave Enemies will only appear if you fight additional waves in a wave battle.
